Wailea, HI (May 28, 2014) – Entering its much anticipated fifteenth year of cinema-under-the-stars, the 2014 Maui Film Festival announced its line up of honorees, screenings and special events taking place June 4-8, 2014 in Wailea. Taking place at the Celestial Cinema located at the Wailea Gold and Emerald Golf Course, the Seaside Cinema Music Cafe & Sunset Lounge at the Grand Wailea, the Castle Theater at the state-of-the-art Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, and the Toes in the Sand Cinema located between the Four Seasons Maui and the Grand Wailea. The festival will offer a full schedule of screenings and special events throughout the Wailea Resort. LUPITA NYONG’O, EMMA ROBERTS AND EVAN RACHEL WOOD TO RECEIVE HONORS AT THE 2014 MAUI FILM FESTIVAL AT WAILEA

Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Roberts and Evan Rachel Wood will be honorees at the 2014 Maui Film Festival, it was announced today by Barry Rivers, Director of the event. The festival will be held June 4­-8, 2014 at the Wailea Resort on Maui. All awards will be presented at the brand new Seaside Cinema Music Cafe and Sunset Lounge located at the Grand Wailea. Tickets and passes to tributes, films, and special events are available now.

“For an event that’s often been referred to as a ‘jewel box’ film festival, this year’s intelligent, talented and beautiful (both inside and out) list of luminaries seamlessly fit into the tapestry of ‘diamonds, rubies and pearls’ we have honored since our inception in 2000,” said Rivers. “To say the least, we’re thrilled beyond words.”

Lupita Nyong’o will receive the 2014 Maui Film Festival’s Rainmaker Award on Saturday, June 7th, which honors “a film artist whose eclectic choices and charismatic performances encourage us all to expand our definition of what it means to be human”. Nyong’o made her feature debut in Steve McQueen’s Academy Award® winning film 12 YEARS A SLAVE alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt. For her portrayal as Patsey, she received the Academy Award® in the category of “Best Supporting Actress” as well as multiple accolades including the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Critics’ Choice Award, the Independent Spirit Award, and NAACP Award. She was last seen in the action thriller NON­STOP, opposite Liam Neeson, Michelle Dockery and Julianne Moore. Nyong’o is also a filmmaker, having served as the creator, director, editor, and producer of the award­winning feature­length documentary, IN MY GENES. A recent graduate of the Yale School of Drama’s acting program, Nyongo‘s stage credits include playing Perdita in THE WINTER’S TALE (Yale Repertory Theater), Sonya in UNCLE VANYA Katherine in THE TAMING OF THE SHREW as well as being in the original production of Michael Mitnick’s ELIJAH.

Emma Roberts, Honoree at the 2014 Maui Film Festival

Emma Roberts will receive the 2014 Maui Film Festival’s Shining Star Award on Thursday June 5th, which honors “a film artist who dares to dream big dreams and delivers brilliantly charismatic and revelatory performances every time that opportunity knocks.” Roberts can currently be seen in Gia Coppola’s directorial debut PALO ALTO alongside James Franco and Jack Kilmer. In February 2014, Roberts starred in ADULT WORLD, directed by Scott Coffey. She also recently starred in the third installment of Ryan Murphy’s AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN. Roberts will next appear in AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW scheduled to premiere in Fall 2014. In August 2013, Roberts starred in the summer hit comedy WE’RE THE MILLERS opposite Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis from director Rawson Marshall Thurber. Roberts lso recently had a memorable supporting role in the 2012 Sundance Premiere CELESTE AND ESSE FOREVER. Other films that Roberts has appeared in include EMPIRE STATE, THE ART OF GETTING BY, SCREAM, IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, 4.3.2.1, TWELVE, WHAT’S WRONG WITH VIRGINIA, VALENTINE’S DAY, HOTEL FOR DOGS, LYMELIFE, THE WINNING SEASON, NANCY DREW, BLOW, BIG LOVE, GRAND CHAMPION, AQUAMARINE, and on the Nickelodeon hit comedy series UNFABULOUS.

Evan Rachel Wood, Honoree at the 2014 Maui Film Festival

Evan Rachel Wood will receive the 2014 Maui Film Festival’s Nova Award on Friday June 6th, which honors “a film artist for their astonishingly original and seamless performances, and the way they consistently infuse each character that they embody with insight, humanity and wisdom.” Wood gained critical acclaim, a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie” for her portrayal of Veda Pierce in the HBO miniseries MILDRED PIERCE. She also earned acclaim for her powerful performance as Stephanie, Mickey Rourke’s estranged daughter in Darren Aronofsky’s 2008 film, THE WRESTLER. Wood had her breakout role in 2003 with Catherine Hardwicke’s controversial independent film, THIRTEEN (2003), for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actress in a Drama as well as a Best Actress SAG Award. She displayed her singing talents in 2007 with her role as Lucy in Julie Taymor’s ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, set to the songs of the Beatles. She was most recently seen in CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN, A CASE OF YOU and BAREFOOT. In 2010, she was seen in Robert Redford’s, THE CONSPIRATOR, she also appeared as Queen Sophie­Ann Leclerq in TRUE BLOOD. Wood also starred in THE IDES OF MARCH directed by and starring George Clooney. Maui Film Festival Presents First-Ever ‘FirstNight of FirstLight’

A Trio of Festival Encores Screen Saturday, November 23rd at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center

KAHULUI, HI, Nov 18 – Kicking off a new holiday tradition, Maui Film Festival will host the First-Ever ‘FirstNight of FirstLight’, a trio of encore showings of some of the best-loved films from the 2013 Maui Film Festival. The screenings will take place this Saturday, November 23, 2013 in The Castle Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The screening series begins at 4:00 p.m. with documentary The Short Game, followed by award-winning independent film Short Term 12 at 6:00 p.m., and closing with documentary 20 Feet From Stardom at 8:00 p.m.

Single tickets are $15, or $12 per film with purchase of a $48, 4-ticket VIP FastPass, which can be shared with family and friends. . FastPasses are valid for both November, December and January’s FirstLight screenings.  Tickets and VIP FastPasses can be purchased at the MACC Box Office by calling  808-242-SHOW (7469) or by visiting the box office during its hours of operation, Monday – Saturday 10am – 6pm and one hour prior to all film screenings.

“We know its challenging for people to see every film they’d like to during each June’s Festival.  So giving them a chance to see some of June’s films that are generating huge awards season buzz in L.A., NY and beyond seemed like a unique way to kick off this year’s series,” said Barry Rivers, founder and director of the Maui Film Festival and curator of FirstLight.

Rivers is also curating the FirstLight: Academy Screenings, which will continue with 20 Hawaii Premieres and 10 Special Screenings, starting in mid-December and continuing through January, 5, 2014 with an abundance of Oscar-worthy films showing in The Castle Theater.

Family-friendly, surprising, touching, and often hilarious) sports documentary featuring 7 year-old world champion golfers. SXSW-Award winner. (Kids 12 & Under Free)

SHORT TERM 12 (6:00 p.m.)
SXSW winning masterpiece starring Maui Film Festival Rising Star Honoree Brie Larson and written and directed by Maui born and raised filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, this film is being called one of the best indie films of the year. (Fun note: this screening is coincidentally happening on Destin’s birthday!)

20 FEET FROM STARDOM (8:00 p.m.)
Opened Sundance Film Festival in 2013, a rocking documentary featuring Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bette Midler and Sheryl Crow (and more) singing praises for the greatest backup singers of our time.

  • Eddie Aikau and Nainoa Thompson Honored with Visionary Awards Wednesday, June 12th at 8:00 PM. Eddie Aikau (represented by family members) and Nainoa Thompson will be presented with the Visionary Award for living lives beyond limits, outside of fear.Following the presentation will be the Opening Night screening of Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau – the Hawaii premiere of the film.
  • Jessica Chastain Honored with the Nova Award Saturday, June 15th at 8:00 PM Jessica Chastain will be presented with the Nova Award, which honors a film artist whose stunningly original and seamless performances consistently infuse each character they play with unique insight and wisdom.
